I was watching the Colbert Report and Phil Gingrey said that he's "indeed a Georgia peach" (obviously, with some comedic reaction). What does that mean and why is it funny?

Reply:I'm not really sure but the other day i saw a movie called "The colour of love" about a white woman living in Georgia whose daughter died and left her with her black grandaughter. Anyway, this woman was in a club called the "Georgia Peaches", which consisted of some other wealthy, high society women whose cause was to help in charities and drink teas in the gardens of their expensive houses.
