Peachy Blueberry Pie

Ingredients:

Crust

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup solid vegetable shortening

5-7 tablespoons cold water

Filling

1/2 cup sugar

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 packages (16 ounces each) frozen peach slices, thawed

1 cup blueberries

1 egg

1 tablespoon water

2 teaspoons sugar (optional)

Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. For crust, combine flour and salt in large bowl; mix well. Cut shortening into flour mixture using Pastry Blender until shortening resembles the size of small peas. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of water over flour mixture; gently toss with a fork. Repeat until mixture is moist enough to form a ball. Divide dough in half. Lightly flour Baker's Mat. Place one ball of dough on center of mat; flatten to 1/2-inch thickness. Roll dough from center to edges, forming a 12-inch circle. Place pastry into Deep Dish Pie Plate. Trim pastry even with rim of pie plate.

2. For filling, in large bowl, combine sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon; mix well. Toss peach slices with sugar mixture until evenly coated; gently stir in blueberries. Spoon peach mixture into bottom crust.

3. For top crust, roll remaining dough as directed in Step 1 and place over filling. Fold top crust under bottom crust; seal and flute edges. Whisk egg and water in small bowl; brush evenly over crust. Cut four slits in top crust to allow steam to escape. Sprinkle sugar evenly over crust, if desired. Cover edge of pie with 2- to 3-inch-wide strips of aluminum foil or Pie Shield. Bake 45 minutes; remove foil or Pie Shield. Bake an additional 10-15 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Remove from oven; cool at least 2 hours. Serve with ice cream, if desired.

Grape Juice Preserves

1/2 cup unsweetened grape juice

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

2 teaspoons unflavored gelatin

1/2 cup cold water

Bring grape juice and lemon juice to boil; reduce heat and simmer for 4 minutes.

While simmering, soak gelatin in cold water until dissolved.

Remove juice from heat.

Add gelatin to hot grape juice; mix well.

When cool, pour into small sterilized containers and refrigerate.

Makes 1 1/2 to 2 cups.

I haven't tried this recipe. It's all I could get with no sugar. It came from this site: http://www.recipegoldmine.com/nosugaradd...

And these are kinda neat:

Pepper Jelly

Hot peppers have become a popular garden item. This jelly is a safe and delicious way to preserve them--it's excellent with cream cheese and crackers. However, take caution and wear rubber gloves when handling hot peppers. Sweet peppers may be substituted for hot peppers, if desired.

4 or 5 hot peppers, cored and cut in pieces

4 sweet green peppers, cored and cut in pieces

1 cup white vinegar

5 cups sugar

1 pouch (1/2 bottle) liquid pectin

Green food coloring

Yields 5 half-pint jars

Sterilize canning jars. Put half the peppers and half the vinegar into blender container; cover and process at liquify until pepper is liquified. Repeat with remaining peppers and vinegar. Combine liquified peppers, sugar, and vinegar in a large saucepot and boil slowly for 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Add liquid pectin and boil hard 1 minute. Skim and add a few drops of green food coloring. Pour jelly immediately into hot canning jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Wipe jar rims and adjust lids. Process 5 minutes in a boiling water bath.

Pear-Apple Jam

2 cups peeled, cored and finely chopped pears (about 2 pounds)

1 cup peeled, cored, and finely chopped apples

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

6 1/2 cups sugar

1/3 cup bottled lemon juice

1 pouch liquid pectin

Yields 7 or 8 half-pint jars

Sterilize canning jars. Crush apples and pears in a large saucepan. Stir in cinnamon. Thoroughly mix sugar and lemon juice with fruits and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly. Immediately stir in pectin. Bring to a full rolling boil and boil hard 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; quickly skim off foam. Pour jam immediately into hot jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Wipe jar rims and adjust lids. Process 5 minutes in a boiling water bath.

What Color goes best with Peach?

I am painting my bathroom and it currently has this hideous peach tile. Need suggestions.

What Color goes best with Peach?
Try creating a color pallette here.
Reply:Khaki is a great color with just about anything. Try that and a simple faux finish...that should give you the modern look you are trying to achieve.
Reply:really knock your eyes out with fire-weed red...

y'know you can remove the tile and replace it with something you like, yes it is work and expense, but this is your space we're talking about, and you don't like it...change it to what you do like.

grow your wings kid, and fly.
Reply:Yikes not that 70's peach... tough one

maybe an off white or beige might blend it with it

or compliment it?

Try holding some paint chips beside the tiles or if you have an extra tile bring it with you to the store.

The tone of peach and undertones will make a big difference in the shade you choose.
Reply:I would say a cream/off white would look nice but if you really hate the "hideous peach tile" i saw this paint (i forgot the name of it) on HGTV that allows you to paint basically any color over your current tiles and it covers evenly. The show only used the paint on some border tiles though so it may not work as well on the floor if is high-traffic.
Reply:try a little neutral beige or whites.
Reply:A deep Turquoise goes great with peach!Try a sampler before actually matching the colors out.Take a few days to decide if these are the colors that you want.
Reply:My house was built in the 50's and has pink tile. It has a gray border. Sounds ugly; well the bathtub matchs. So did the toilet and sink, but we replaced them... I hide the tub with a pretty shower curtain.

To accent the tiles, I have black and white stripes on the wallpaper with a cute border; it ties the colors in real well.

A tropical theme would work, but if you want classy; go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a bunch of color chips. Try all colors, but stay away from blah colors....tans, whites, cremes will be dull. You need a color to make it POP...like the guy said a red would be great. Don't worry, it's not the end of the world. I wouldn't recomment painting the tile. It may not last and then were would you be.....

Get some chips and go to town. Do you have a digital camera? Take and pic and email to me and I will help you!

Good Luck

Kelli
Reply:Peaches and creme! duh lol
Reply:White or pastel green should look great
Reply:Add a tile mural over the tile-- just mount it on backer board and frame in a stone tile frame- then mount over the existing tile- maybe a tropical beach scene with corals ,greens and turqs -- to tie colors together.

Any image on tile
Reply:Red. BRIGHT red.

Dont listen to people who said creme because peach and creme make for a very bland room. The colors are all dull. You need a color that pops.

Teal goes with peach too. If you have hardwood flooring, these colors would be perfect.

Or even with creme or off-white carpet, use a color that stands out.

How do i stop my peach fronted conure from bitting? he is 8 months old?

i just got an 8month old peach fronted conure and we are trying to get him not to bite does anyone have any suggestions for me we are also working with him on steping up

How do i stop my peach fronted conure from bitting? he is 8 months old?
Now is the time to start training your bird because he is so young but please be patient, birds aren't trained overnight.

My bird (whom I rehomed when he was 15-years old) is so well trained with the biting issue that he'll bite and then say, "Mikki, no bite!", or bite and then say, "Kiss?".

You may find the links below helpful.

Silver2sea
Reply:"Stepping up" and biting are closely related topics because one can be used to discipline the other.

If your bird bites when you reach into his cage, use a perch to remove him from the cage. Press the perch gently but firmly into his abdomen and say "Up" in a firm voice. Once you have the bird on the perch you can transfer him to another perch or to your hand in the same manner. You may need to use perches for awhile until he stops biting at a reaching hand.

If the bird is on your hand when he bites, then do this: Bobble your hand and say "No bite!" firmly at the instance of the bite. The bobbling makes the bird very uncomfortable- he thinks he's going to fall and he will stop biting and step around rapidly to regain his footing. Then use your finger or the perch and IMMEDIATELY make him step up, again and again. Make sure you say "Up" every time. (I do it about 6-8 times if a bird tries to bite me or succeeds in biting me) Then I hold the bird below my eye level and give him a "hairy eyeball." This is a glare (eyebrows down, mouth scowling) DIRECTLY into the eyes of the bird. They don't like this at all. My birds will get this wide-eyed "innocent" look when they get the hairy eyeball and often will turn their heads away to break eye contact with me. It's obvious they understand that I am upset with them.

You are showing the bird who is boss by making him uncomfortable and unsure while he is misbehaving. Remember that birds equate dominance with height, so your bird's cage and perches should be well below your eye level. Never put him on your shoulder- a bird on your shoulder thinks he's your equal and the next bite could be your ear, lip, or eye. When you're making him step up, keep him below your eye level at all times. NEVER hit a bird. They do not understand it at all and may bite you more severely in response. Also, birds are fragile. A 'tap' to your dog could break a bone or beak on a bird. (Not that I'm advocating hitting your dog, either!)

Remember to reward your bird for being good, too, not just discipline when bad. I am 100% for bribing parrots with food treats when they're good. Find a favorite treat of your bird's- mine like Honey Nut Cheerios- and use it ONLY during training sessions. Every time the bird does what you want it to- stepping up, stepping off, etc., say "Good Bird" in a high-pitched, overly happy voice, and give him the treat. Don't treat your bird to stop him from screaming, though- he'll have you waiting on him hand and foot around the clock. Try to ignore demaning screaming, or cover him with a dark sheet and turn out the lights for about a half hour. Then when he's quiet, uncover him, say "Good Bird!" and give him that treat.

With consistant and firm training, your bird's biting should be greatly reduced. Do yourself a huge favor and get a subscription to Bird Talk magazine- it is fantastic!

Good Luck!
Reply:Everytime he tries to bite gently take your finger and thap his beak.at the same time say NO loudly..thapping is like when you flick your forfinger off your thumb, they get the message real quick. show love after and talk to him and praise him when he doesnt bite...it works but takes time for some...
Reply:Please, don't tap the bird's beak. This can cause them to get angry with you or think that you're being aggressive and become afraid of you. When he bites, he's probably just trying to get you to stop what you're doing (such as putting your hand in the cage or having him step up), and when you take your hand away because he bites, this encourages him to keep doing it! It makes him think "well, if I bite, I get what I want, so I'll keep doing it!". Just ignoring the biting and showing him that biting doesn't solve anything usually makes the bird stop and find other ways of communicating with you.

If this doesn't work, gently pinch the beak and look the bird in the eye and say "no" in a firm voice. Don't break eye contact until the BIRD looks away. This shows him that you're dominant and it needs to listen to you. The reason pinching the beak works and tapping doesn't is because tapping can actually hurt the bird or seem aggressive to it. Pinching doesn't hurt them at all, and because it is a more calm action, it doesn't seem aggressive. They respond very well to this because it's causing the bird to realize that the action is unacceptable, but doesn't make the bird afraid of you or angry with you. If you need any more help or have other questions, please feel free to email me!
Reply:give him bones so he will not bite u onley on the boney that he is chewing on
Reply:He'll stop biting when he trusts you. For stepping up, try and push him gently on his stomach and if he wants to step up he'll probably step up.

Anyone know how to start peach trees from seeds?

I have a dwarf peach tree and it is covered with fruit and I want to know how to start grow trees from the seeds. Any help would be appreciated !

Anyone know how to start peach trees from seeds?
Most fruit trees these days are actually two plants grafted together. The root area up to the "flair" (area where the two plants are joined) is called the stock. The part of the tree producing the fruit is called the scion.

Grafting is done to combine the strong root system of a particular variety with the high-yield of fruit produced by another variety.

If you attempt to produce your peach from seed, it wont turn out anything like the one you have now! In fact, the peaches will likely be stunted with disease and rot directly on the stem.

Sorry to be such a bum! You're better off researching a quality variety at a nursery and adding it to your collection.
Reply:The easy way.... plant it. That's all you REALLY have to do. Nature will take its course.
Reply:go to a nursery and get some rooting compound %26amp; follow the directions!
