Okay recently i got these two peach faced love birds, atleast i think thats what breed they are..
I try to stick my hand in there to grab either one of them and they just flop all over the cage. I was wondering if theres any special way of taming these birds? Me and my mom have been bitten twice, and even bled cuz of the bites!
It hasnt been that long since i got them like two days, but i still dont really see any progress.
I have been using a leather footbal glove to handle them..i was wondering if this will help at all, because i dont want them to just get used to the glove and not bare hands.
What are some steps i could take? These birds go crazy as soon as they see me even get close to the cage.. They are babies though so i figured there might be something i could do. One is female and one is male, if it makes any difference.
Thanks for the info :)
Peach faced Love birds taming! Help!?
okay first off let those birds get used to their new environment . the glove is okay at first but you need to get them used to your hand but i would give them a week or so to get used to you and your mom . you are handling them way too soon .Love birds are very hard to tame anyway but just give them time and have patience . U want them to learn that you are their friend and mean them no harm . let them alone for a few days and things should progress on from there . good luck .
Reply:you need to be very patient. when your around your birds use a friendly soft voice. and tell them they are good birds when you acheive a desired reaction. dont chase them aournd the cage with your hand... start out by putting your hand in the cage, once the birds settle down try moving it clower to one. just be slow.... once they get used to your handdont pick them up. you need to teach them to %26quot;Step up%26quot; you do this by simply placing your index finger just above theri feet below their belly. push up slightly.... once they step up, keep your hand in the cage and praise the bird.... continue this process and eventually take them out of the cage... remember this is a LONG process. you can use treats as well......be patient
PS. take the glove off. it is scaring them more than helping your situation...
Reply:You need to let them get used to being in their new home first of all. Then work on just letting them be calm with you near the cage. Don%26#039;t just reach in and grab them. That does nothing for taming, and only makes them afraid of you and your hands. Once you can sit by the cage without them flipping out, try offering them a piece of millet through the bars. If they accept that then try going with them in a small room and letting them out. They%26#039;ll ignore you for awhile, but lovebirds are nosy, and smart. They%26#039;re going to eventually want to see what you%26#039;re all about. It might take a week, a few weeks, even a few months. It takes a LOT of time to tame a lovebird that%26#039;s not even remotely tame. If you can separate the birds, that will help as well. Together they bond to one another, and will feed off one anothers fear. Separately they%26#039;re easier to work with, and it seems to speed up taming.
Reaching and grabbing the birds, really only puts you backwards in training. Try going slow, let the birds come to you, and you%26#039;ll have much happier birds.
Here%26#039;s a great site for all sorts of info, including a message board where you can ask anything and everything about lovebirds. http://www.lovebirdsplus.com/community/i...
